Loving Your Bones: Why Bone Health Deserves Your Attention Now

ree

We often think about our heart, our skin, or our joints when it comes to healthy aging—but how often do we think about our bones? These silent pillars of our body support everything we do, from getting out of bed to walking across the room. And yet, they are easy to ignore—until they start to weaken.

I didn’t think much about bone health in my 30s or 40s. Even in my 50s, it felt like something that happened to “older” women. But now, in my 60s, my bones have become my #1 health priority. Routine DEXA scans have revealed osteopenia—and even some areas of osteoporosis. I was shocked. I didn’t feel any different. But inside, my bones were slowly losing density.

The truth is, this decline doesn't happen overnight. Bone loss is a silent, slow process that often begins long before we’re aware of it. And by the time we do notice it, we may have already lost decades of bone strength.

What Is Osteoporosis, Really?

Most people think osteoporosis is just an aging issue. But at its core, it’s a condition of micronutrient deficiency. When your body isn’t getting enough calcium (or when it’s unable to absorb and use what you consume), it will begin stealing calcium from your bones to keep your heart beating and your muscles working. Your body is brilliant—it will always prioritize survival. But it comes at a cost.

Bone is living tissue. It’s constantly in a cycle of removal and regeneration. Old cells are broken down and cleared away while new cells are built. But as we age, the regeneration process slows while the breakdown process continues—eventually tipping the balance toward bone loss.

This is why it's so important to be proactive—before the scale tips too far.

So What Do Our Bones Need?

There’s no magic bullet, but there are proven lifestyle practices that can help rebuild and protect your bones—without pharmaceuticals.

Here’s what I’m focusing on:

🦴 1. Calcium (From the Right Sources)

Yes, we need calcium—but not just from a glass of milk. Leafy greens like kale, bok choy, broccoli, and almonds are powerful sources. I also supplement with high-quality calcium that’s paired with magnesium and vitamin K2 to ensure it’s actually absorbed into the bone—not deposited in arteries.

☀️ 2. Vitamin D (The Sunshine Vitamin)

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium. But many of us—especially as we age—don’t get enough. I get regular sunshine when I can, and supplement when I can’t. I also make sure my levels are tested regularly.

💤 3. Deep Restorative Sleep

Your bones rebuild while you sleep. If you’re not sleeping well, your bones aren’t healing well. Prioritizing deep, consistent sleep has become a non-negotiable part of my holistic health plan.

🏋️‍♀️ 4. Weight-Bearing and Resistance Exercise

One of the most powerful things you can do for your bones is lift things. Strength training, walking, resistance bands, hiking, yoga—they all count. Your bones respond to pressure and force. Every time you push against gravity, you're signaling your body to grow stronger.

Why I Chose a Holistic Approach

When I was first diagnosed, the pharmaceutical route was offered. But after researching the risks and long-term side effects, I decided to take a different path—one that supports the entire body, not just the symptoms.

I’m choosing to rebuild my bones holistically. I want my bones to be strong and my whole body to be well. This journey has made me more intentional about what I eat, how I move, how I rest, and what I believe is possible—even in my 60s and beyond.

A Loving Reminder

If you’ve never thought about your bones before—consider this your gentle nudge. Bone loss may be silent, but that doesn’t mean you have to be. You can start now. You can rebuild. You can be strong again.

Your bones are your foundation.

Love them like your life depends on them—because it does.
