How a conversation about purpose over 50 became my defining moment
Yesterday, I joined a Zoom call with a journalist writing a piece on 'Finding Purpose Over 50'.
I expected a friendly conversation… but what I didn’t expect was how powerfully it would remind me that I’m living exactly what I was created to do.
As soon as we began, the words flowed. Every question he asked seemed to connect perfectly with the next, and the answers came easily — not from notes or preparation, but from years of experience, faith, and growth. I realized that this wasn’t just something I talk about anymore. This is who I am.
Redefining Time Freedom
We spoke about time freedom, and I shared how I’ve turned that concept around.
Time freedom isn’t about having extra time — it’s about deciding what to do with your time.
When my corporate career ended, I said yes to several new things just to see what fit. Those “yeses” helped me explore, but eventually I gave myself permission to say no to the things that didn’t align with my purpose. Saying yes doesn’t have to mean forever — it just means you’re open to discovery.
Discovering Purpose Again
He asked how I help others discover their purpose, and I shared my What’s Next? program — a guided process that helps people rediscover what they’re good at and what they love. Those two things often point directly toward purpose.
He also asked if I believe our gifts have always been with us. My answer was simple: yes.
At a recent high school reunion, my grade school friends reminded me of who I was long before titles or achievements — and it struck me that those same qualities define me now.
Our gifts are woven into us from the beginning. Purpose isn’t something we invent; it’s something we awaken to.
Overcoming Fear After 50
He asked why I think so many people over 50 don’t go on this journey of rediscovery. I told him that fear often holds us back — fear of what others might think, fear that it’s too late to start something new, fear of choosing the wrong path because we think we don’t have time to change again.
But the truth is this: if you’re still here, you still have a purpose.
It may not look like what you imagined, and it may not resemble what you used to do — but it will always align with who you are.
Living the Message
As we wrapped up, I shared how I now guide others through the same discovery process that transformed my own life — the Living Declaration, finding a Word for the Year, and a Mission/Purpose/Proclamation/Passion/Path Statement.
It’s taken me ten years to walk this journey myself, and my mission is to help others move through it faster — with more clarity, confidence, and faith.
That interview wasn’t just a conversation. It was confirmation.
I’m not old — I’ve awakened my purpose.
And my hope is that when people read that article, they’ll believe in what’s possible for their own lives, too.
