Life has a way of throwing curveballs when we least expect it. One day you're standing firmly on familiar ground, and the next, you're thrust into an unfamiliar space—the in-between. It's that unsettling period between what was and what's yet to come, brought about by job loss, divorce, an empty nest, or any sudden life change that shatters the life you once knew.
I know this space intimately. My moment came unexpectedly when my position as a VP of Sales ended abruptly. Without warning or explanation, my corporate career, which I assumed would last forever, dissolved beneath my feet. Suddenly, I found myself in that confusing, painful place called the in-between. I wasn't prepared, and I didn’t handle it gracefully. I grieved deeply, questioned my worth, and struggled to understand why this happened to me.
Years later, with the gift of hindsight, I see clearly now—it didn't happen to destroy me. It happened to redirect me toward my true purpose. My journey through the in-between taught me lessons I want to share with anyone currently navigating their own uncertain path.
So, how do you move through this in-between space?
Breathe. Before anything else, take a deep breath. Allow yourself the space to feel, to grieve, and to honor what you've lost.
Mourn the loss. Whether it was a job, a marriage, or a lifestyle, it's important to acknowledge your pain. Give yourself permission to grieve; it's part of the healing.
Take a sabbatical from life. If possible, step back. Allow yourself time to rest, reflect, and disconnect from the daily grind. My four-month sabbatical changed my life—it allowed me to reconnect with myself and understand what truly mattered.
Uncover your gifts and strengths. Reflect on what made you successful in your previous chapter. These strengths don't disappear; they're waiting to be redirected into something new and meaningful.
Discover your true purpose. Your purpose isn't tied to a job title, relationship status, or any external label. It's deeper. Reflect on what brings you joy, fulfillment, and a sense of contribution.
Read and grow. Books, blogs, podcasts—immerse yourself in learning. Stories of resilience, purpose, and personal growth can light your path.
Find a good therapist. Having professional support can be life-changing. A therapist can provide guidance, healing, and perspective as you navigate uncertainty.
Seek new communities. Surround yourself with people who inspire and uplift you. Find groups aligned with your new interests or those experiencing similar transitions.
Evaluate your inner circle. During times of change, who you keep close matters. Lean into relationships that support and encourage your growth. Let go of relationships that hold you back.
Believe. Trust that there is purpose in your transition. Believe in yourself, your capabilities, and the unseen opportunities ahead.
Take small steps of discovery. Embrace curiosity. Try new things, explore different paths, and don't be afraid of making mistakes. Each step, even if small, leads you forward.
Don't be afraid to pivot. Changing direction doesn't mean failure—it means growth. Sometimes the best destinations are reached by unexpected detours.
Slowly but surely, your amazing encore will reveal itself. The in-between is not just a place of pain; it's a fertile ground for growth, renewal, and reinvention.
Take action. If you're feeling lost or uncertain, consider working with someone who understands this journey firsthand. I've been there, and now, my purpose is to guide others through their own in-between.
You're not alone, and your next chapter can be even more beautiful than the last.
